Apply for Doctoral Degrees

The doctoral degrees available at Sibelius Academy are the Licentiate of Music (LMus) and the Doctor of Music (DMus). Doctoral students can choose from three programmes: the Art Study Programme, Research Programme or the Development Study Programme.

Prospective doctoral students must have completed a Master of Music degree or its equivalent at Sibelius Academy. Eligibility may also be based on other prior studies, subject to the rector's assessment of the candidate's prospects for successful study in the programme.

Prospective doctoral students are required to submit a doctoral study plan to the Academic Council. The rector grants the approval on the basis of the Council's recommendation. Applicants for the Art Study Programme must first pass the artistic proficiency test. Doctoral students are required to have a sufficient command of Finnish, Swedish or English. Applicants whose mother tongue is not one of these three languages are required to take a language proficiency test.

Enrolment as an External (Preparatory) Student

Before admission to the doctoral programme, the applicant must enrol as an external student to prepare his or her doctoral study plan. External students may be granted permission to attend department sessions and to receive guidance at the discretion of the department head.

Applicants who have completed their existing degree elsewhere are advised to discuss enrolment in the Academy's doctoral programme with the relevant department or professor.

To enrol as a preparatory external student, applicants must use the form which can be downloaded here.

Applications for enrolment as a preparatory external student are accepted throughout the year, with the exception of the DocMus department where applications are processed once a year.
